Manado Art Gallery
Travelling to or from the Sam Ratulangi Airport on your arrival or departure from Manado,
you will pass the newly opened Manado Art Gallery located at Jl. Martadinata. Designed as
a venue to showcase local art, the Gallery also stocks numerous souvenir items of interest
to domestic and international travellers alike.
The paintings on display have been contributed by local artists, and feature themes
associated with North Sulawesi. The collection is continually changing and new artists
will be added in the future. The individual styles each reflect the artists' personal view
of their surroundings, each with a unique Indonesian twist.
Also on display is a selection of Karawang material (fabric) unique to North Sulawesi. The
beautiful embroidery displayed on the cloth makes this an interesting item to collect; the
material can also be used to make jackets, skirts or blouses. A variety of sarongs from
around Indonesia are also on sale and always make a welcome gift for your friends and
family overseas.
Upon entering the gallery a striking display of brightly coloured hand woven handbags
catches the eye. There are various sizes and types to tempt the shopper. A good selection
of carvings and wooden goods round out the collection with a variety of prices to suit all
budgets.
The Manado Art Gallery is air-conditioned and is brightly lit and certainly an inviting
venue to browse at your leisure. Make sure you allow ample time to make that special
purchase.
Manado Cultural Center
This is the place to go for art and culture. There are regular performances of traditional
dances, folk songs, drama and traditional music such as Kolintang and a Bamboo orchestra.
It is located on Jl. Maengket Manado. From Pasar 45, you can take a microlet to route
"17 Agustus".
North Sulawesi Provincial Museum
The Museum has artistic, cultural and historical remains from several ethnic groups in
Indonesia as well as artifacts from the Dutch, Portuguese, Japanese, Chinese and Swedish
settlers. The Museum is located on Jl. W.R. Supratman, Manado.
Ban Hin Kiong Temple
This colorful Buddhist temple is the oldest in Eastern Indonesia. There is an attractive
annual festival around this temple during the Toa Peh Kong period in February, mixing
traditional Chinese cultural and religious activities. In this festival, there may be
performances like Barongsay and acrobatics performances. The temple is located on Jl.
Panjaitan in the center of the city.
Orchid Garden
The orchid garden in Manado has a collection of unusual and rare orchid specimens,
including a black orchid. The garden is set among towering coconut trees with well-tended
green spaces. It is located at Kairagi, about 5 km from downtown Manado on the road to
Bitung, and can be easily reached from Manado by microlet: from Paal-dua terminal, take
the Kairagi-bound microlet.
Tasik Ria Beach and Resort
Tasik Ria Beach and Resort is located about 20 km South of Manado. It is a wonderful site
for swimming, snorkeling, water skiing and diving.
Wenang Golf Club
Wenang Golf Course is a nine hole course, located at Kayuwatu, about 7 km from downtown
Manado, on the road to Sam Ratulangi international airport. It covers an area of 1800
square meters. It is located in the suburbs, where cool air, restaurant facilities and
dressing rooms make it a truly enjoyable experience. It can be easily reached from Manado
by microlet: from the Paal-dua terminal, take the Lapangan, Poli, or Perum microlet.
World War II Memorial
The WW II Memorial was erected to commemorate the destruction of Manado during WW II, and
is a memorial to those whose were killed during that war. It is located in the center of
the city, next to the Central Church "Gereja Sentrum, Manado".
Wolter Monginsidi and Piere Tendean
Monument
This monument was erected in Memory of Wolter Monginsidi and Captain Piere Tendean,young
men who died serving the state. Wolter Monginsidi died in Makassar during the Indonesian
independence struggle and Captain Tendean was killed in Jakarta during the Communist
rebellion in 1965. The memorial is located in Bahu on the waterfront and is a favourite
place to relax and enjoy the beautiful views of Manado Bay.
Pasar 45, Lolong Lasut Monument and
Taman Kesatuan Bangsa
Pasar 45 is the heart of the city. It is the busiest area in the city, surrounded by
supermarkets, small stores,
restaurants, banks, and flea markets. Lolong Lasut statue is in Taman Kesatuan Bangsa
which is located in the
heart of Pasar 45. Lolong Lasut was the founder of Manado.
Pasar Bersehati
This is the market for fresh fish and vegetables. Just walking distance north of the
center of the city, but you can also take a microlet for route "Paal 2" and ask
if it passes this market place.
Piere Tendean Boulevard
The area along the Piere Tendean Boulevard is a place to hang about, walk, relax and enjoy
the views of Manado Bay and Manado Tua island at sunset. This place is familiarly known by
local people as "Bangku Panjang" (long bench). It is a very popular place among
the local people from the late afternoon until late at night. However it is not advised to
stay there after 11 pm on Saturday night as it can then be unsafe.
Sam Ratulangi International Airport
Located about 7 km north from the center of Manado. To get there from the city, you can
take taxis or Damri
busses, and also the microlet from the Paal 2 terminal.
Manado Harbour
The harbour is located in the center of the city, a walking distance from Pasar 45. The
harbour serves mid-size ships to Gorontalo or the Sangir Talaud Archipelago and small
boats to surrounding islands like Bunaken, Manado Tua, Siladen, Mantehage, etc. The piers
for small boats are located at the mouth of Jengki river (Kuala Jengki).
Paal Dua Terminal
Paal 2 terminal is located close to the Horse statue in Paal 2, coming from the center of
Manado. This is the terminal for the microlets to Lapangan, the Sam Ratulangi
International Airport, Poli, Perum, Kairagi, Paniki and also the terminal for the
intercity buses to Bitung, Likupang, and Airmadidi.
Malalayang Terminal
Malalayang terminal is located in Malalayang. This is the terminal for microlets and
intercity buses to the
southwest part of Minahasa such as Amurang, and also for trans-Sulawesi intercity buses to
Kotamobagu and
Gorontalo.
Ranotana Terminal
Ranotana terminal is located in Ranotana. This is the terminal for microlets from Pasar
45, Paal 2 and Malalayang
and for intercity buses to the center part of Minahasa such as to Tondano and Tomohon.
